Tiple boot on imac

Thanks to intel processor compatibility I tried to install 3 OS (osx Leopard, win xp pro, ubuntu 7.10) on the same machine: my new imac 20′.
Last weekend, on a very bad rainy day, I dedicated to the installations taking cue from some tutorials I found on the internet.

The main difference I found (usually tutorials refer to installations starting from a 10.4.x system) is about Boot Camp: using Leopard, you no loger need to create a windows dirvers cd with Boot Camp, simply install win xp and insert Leopard CD/DVD in your DVD drive: drivers will be automatically installed on your system… pretty cool!

Also, diskutil utility, provided by osx doesn’t still support “Linux” partitioning type, I solved the problem creating the Linux partition as HFS+ and then re-formatting it during ubuntu installation process. In the picture you can see rEFIt showing the boot menu.

Except for this two differencies, I followed the tutorial and everything is ok (audio, video etc.); now, as you can see in the pictures, I can choose which OS use on my new imac!

Triplo boot su imac

Grazie alla compatibilità del processore intel ho voluto sperimentare l’installazione di 3 sistemi operativi (osx Leopard, win xp pro, ubuntu 7.10) sulla stessa macchina, il mio nuovo imac 20′.
Lo scorso weekend, complice una brutta giornata di pioggia, mi sono dedicato all’impresa prendendo spunto da alcuni tutorial reperibili in rete.
La differenza principale rispetto a quanto espresso dai tutorial, che in genere si riferiscono all’installazione partendo da un osx 10.4.x, sta proprio in Leopard: da Boot Bamp infatti non è più necessario creare un cd con i driver dell’hardware, il cd di Leopard stesso, se inserito nel cd-rom sotto windows, auto installa i driver necessari al sistema operativo di redmond per riconoscere tutte le periferiche del nostro imac.

Inoltre, l’utility diskutil, fornita assieme ad osx non supporta più il partizionamento di tipo “Linux”, io ho risolto formattando la partizione Linux come HFS+ e riformattandola in seguito, durante il processo di installazione di ubuntu. Nella figura si può vedere rEFIt il menu di boot all’opera.
Per il resto, seguendo il tutorial sopra citato, tutto è filato liscio e, come testimoniano le foto, ora posso scegliere il sistema operativo con cui avviare il mio nuovo imac!!
